Music Education

I am pursuing a career that includes both music education and music performance. While at USC, I had an opportunity to teach guitar at St. Vincent Elementary School through the Thornton Community Engagement Project. I found an excitement and enthusiasm towards music with these students that I will foster in all future teaching.

Cognitive Science

At USC, I have a double major in music performance and cognitive science. Cognitive science includes research on learning and memory, computer-based models for learning, and even the study of consciousness. These are fundamental to how we learn and interact with music. I believe that the principles of cognitive science can be applied to new ways of learning music.

Current Projects

I believe a common pitfall for musicians and guitarists is limiting their perception of what can be done on the instrument. This is why I have started developing some approaches to learning the instrument that I have yet to see taught in many traditional settings. Some of the material includes deconstructing the guitar neck through octaves, emulating and drawing from other instrumental styles, and instrument visualization using computer models. By learning about the capacity of the instrument without feeling burdened by constructs, I hope to create a learning experience that is deeper and more accessible.
